So many supposedly independent conspiracy theories eventually arrive at the same conclusion - that Jews are secretly controlling the world. Why does a forged Russian propaganda document from the early twentieth century still sit at the centre of so many of these beliefs?
One aspect of conspiracy theories is that they are fairly predictable.
Almost any event can be a starting point for a conspiracy theory.
It can be the death that is shrouded in mystery. It can be the political scandal. Secret intelligence operations, financial crises, wars, revolutions, corrupt corporations, cover-ups by governments, strange archaeological discoveries, powerful families, secret societies and many more.
Sometimes the original issue was quite reasonable. Governments do keep secrets, after all. Corporations do manipulate information. Intelligence agencies have done covert operations. Powerful individuals have conspired against others. History has many instances of real conspiracies. So to question official explanations is not necessarily irrational.
But in a surprising number of conspiracy stories, someone finds the alleged hidden hand behind everything. And that hidden hand is...
The Jews.
The claim can take different forms. Sometimes it is that Jews control the banks, the media, Hollywood, governments, communism, capitalism, revolutions, wars, immigration, global organisations.
Sometimes supposedly secret societies.
And sometimes the claim becomes even bigger:
That Jewish people collectively control the entire world.
But where did this idea come from?
And why does it keep returning?
The answer takes us into a mixture of ancient prejudice, scapegoating, political propaganda, and one of the most notorious forgeries in modern history.
The document is called:
The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.
And if you have ever encountered the idea that a secret group of Jewish leaders gathered together and planned to take control of the world, there is a very good chance that, directly or indirectly, you have encountered the mythology created by this document.
But the thing is - that the document is fake.
Not controversial, not just disputed, not a case where historians simply cannot agree.
It is a forgery.
And the history of how that forgery was exposed is an interesting as the story within its self.
The Protocols first appeared publicly in the Russian Empire in the early twentieth century.
They were presented as the minutes of secret meetings supposedly held by Jewish leaders who were plotting to take over the world.
According to the story, this mysterious group had developed a long-term plan for manipulating politics, finance, the press and society itself.
It sounds exactly like the kind of document a conspiracy theorist would dream of finding.
There was only one problem. The meetings never happened.
There were no secret Elders of Zion sitting around a table planning the conquest of humanity.
The document was manufactured.
And eventually, investigators discovered something even more embarrassing for the people who promoted it.
Large portions of the supposed secret Jewish plan had been copied from an entirely different book.
A French political satire written decades earlier.
In 1864, the French writer Maurice Joly published a work called Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu.
It was a political satire.
And it was not about a Jewish conspiracy.
There were no Jewish Elders secretly planning world domination.
Instead, Joly used a fictional conversation between the political philosophers Machiavelli and Montesquieu to criticise the authoritarian rule of Napoleon III.
Then, decades later, passages from Joly's work were lifted and transformed.
The political satire was stripped of its original context.
Its ideas were rearranged and Jewish characters and conspiracy themes were inserted.
The result became the supposed secret document known as The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.
In 1921, the Times of London published an investigation by journalist Philip Graves comparing passages from the Protocols with Joly's earlier book.
The similarities were unmistakable.
The supposed secret document was not a revelation from inside a Jewish organisation.
It was plagiarism.
And not particularly sophisticated plagiarism.
The Times described the Protocols as a fake and a clumsy forgery.
Other investigations also identified material resembling passages from an 1868 German novel by Hermann Goedsche.
So we have something quite extraordinary here.
A document that was presented as evidence of a centuries-old Jewish conspiracy was itself the product of deception.
The conspiracy theory required a secret document.
So somebody created one.
And once the document existed, people could point to it and say:
"There! Here is the evidence."
But the evidence had been manufactured to create the conspiracy in the first place.
And conspiracy theories often have a strange ability to protect themselves from disproof.
Because when someone wants to believe something, rather than accept hard evidence, they will convince themselves that:
"Of course they would deny it."
"Of course they would fake evidence to make us think it was forged."
"That's because they have destroyed the evidence."
And then, the evidence against the theory becomes evidence for the theory.
And that is the point at which a false belief can become practically impossible to change.
Conspiracy narratives can absorb almost anything.
If something happens, it was part of the plan.
If nothing happens, the conspirators must have changed the plan.
If evidence appears, it proves the theory.
If evidence disappears, that also proves the theory.
If experts disagree, the experts are supposedly compromised.
If journalists investigate the claim and find nothing, the journalists are supposedly part of the cover-up.
The theory becomes a closed system.
Everything leads back to the same conclusion.
And when people begin to understand that there is an enormous hidden organisation behind world events, when they don't understand the truth about the past and who is actually behind these things.
The Jews became an extraordinarily convenient target.
Why?
Because those who really do run everything, all religions, all political parties, all media etc. Need a scapegoat.
And Jewish communities were minorities in many societies for centuries.
They were often treated as outsiders. They were subjected to discriminatory laws and restrictions.
And old religious prejudices created stereotypes that could be adapted to changing circumstances.
When societies experienced disasters, people sometimes looked for somebody to blame.
During the Black Death, Jews were falsely accused of causing the plague.
During periods of economic hardship, Jews were blamed for financial problems.
During political upheavals, they were accused of causing revolutions.
After Germany's defeat in the First World War, antisemitic conspiracy theories blamed Jews for the country's defeat.
Communism was also falsely portrayed as part of a Jewish conspiracy.
These accusations were not evidence-based explanations.
They were scapegoating.
And they adapted.
The accusation could change depending on whatever society happened to fear at the time.
That is one of the reasons antisemitic conspiracy theories have survived for so long.
And of course there is nothing inherently conspiratorial about questioning powerful people.
If a government commits a crime, investigate it. If a corporation manipulates markets, investigate it. If intelligence agencies conduct secret operations, investigate them. If billionaires influence politics, examine the evidence. If a political organisation behaves corruptly, criticise it. If a government commits human-rights abuses, document them.
Power should be questioned.
Institutions should be scrutinised.
And nobody should receive immunity from criticism simply because they belong to a particular group.
But there is a gigantic difference between an individual who is Jewish doing something wrong, and that all Jewish people are behind all the terrible things that happen in the world.
If someone is Christian and they do a bad thing, does that mean all Christians are bad?
If a white man commits a crime, does that mean all white men should be blamed for that crime?
Of course not, these kind of sweeping generations are not only very harmful, they are childish.
The first is a claim about identifiable individuals or organisations.
The second turns an enormous and diverse population into one imaginary collective actor.
That is the leap.
And it is a very important leap to recognise.
There are Jewish bankers, journalists, politicians, academics, actors, billionaires, socialists, conservatives.
There are religious Jews.
There are secular Jews.
There are Jews who disagree passionately with one another about politics, religion, economics and almost everything else.
There is no single Jewish command centre.
There is no secret meeting where "the Jews" decide what humanity will do next.
And the Protocols never demonstrated such a thing.
It merely created a fictional document claiming that such a thing existed.
Yet the forgery became extraordinarily influential.
Henry Ford's newspaper in the United States published a series based on the Protocols in 1920, and the resulting material was translated into numerous languages.
The Nazis later exploited the Protocols and other antisemitic conspiracy theories as propaganda.
And possibly one of the most disturbing details is that Nazi propagandists did not necessarily need to believe the document was literally genuine. The propaganda was useful because the story itself was useful.
It gave people an enemy.
It transformed complicated political and economic problems into the actions of a single malevolent group.
And that is exactly what scapegoating does.
It takes a complicated world and gives it a simple villain.
The Nazis blamed Jews for Germany's defeat in the First World War.
They blamed Jews for communism.
They blamed Jews for economic problems.
They presented Jews as a hidden enemy responsible for Germany's troubles.
These ideas were not just abstract theories.
They contributed to an environment in which Jews were progressively excluded, persecuted and ultimately murdered on a catastrophic scale during the Holocaust.
And yet, even after the Holocaust, the Protocols did not disappear.
It continued to circulate.
The conspiracy adapted.
The supposed Jewish plan could simply be updated.
Whatever the newest fear happened to be, the old conspiracy could be attached to it.
A new war? A financial crisis? A cultural change? A political revolution? A mysterious event? A global organisation?
The Jews are behind it.
And eventually the theory becomes so enormous that practically everything becomes connected.
This is why the Protocols are so important to understand.
Because they show how a certain type of conspiracy mind functions.
Start with an actual occurrence. Spot something that nobody can explain. Meld it with a second event. Link that to a new one. Add yet a fourth one. Broaden the links further and further.
Eventually your theory has reached that Jews are the secret elite who are thought to have a hand in all world events.
The details can change. The names can change. The political ideology can change.
But the basic structure remains.
Jews are the hidden enemy.
They operate secretly.
They control institutions.
They manipulate events.
And their influence is so enormous that failure to find evidence is itself interpreted as evidence of how powerful it is.
The most ironic thing is that there really is a group of people, a bloodline, that do control the narrative and purposely use scapegoats like aliens, Jews etc to avoid anyone finding out who they truly are. Religion doesn't matter to these people, why would it? They are fully engrossed in the illusion of the material world.
This is why someone can begin by questioning a genuine government cover-up and eventually end up believing an antisemitic conspiracy theory, they are supposed to.
The starting question might have been reasonable.
The conclusion does not automatically follow from it.
And conspiracies really do happen.
But the existence of real conspiracies does not prove that every conspiracy theory is true.
And let's be clear: real conspiracies absolutely exist.
The British government concealed abuses during the Mau Mau detention camps in colonial Kenya.
The Soviet Union covered up its responsibility for the Katyn massacre.
The East German Stasi operated an enormous surveillance network against its own population.
Japan's Unit 731 conducted secret human experimentation.
The Hillsborough disaster in Britain was followed by decades of institutional concealment and attempts to shift blame.
Operation Northwoods was a genuine proposal by senior American military officials to fabricate incidents as a pretext for war against Cuba, although it was never carried out.
These are not fantasies.
They are documented historical events.
COINTELPRO happened.
The Tuskegee syphilis study happened.
Governments have lied.
Corporations have concealed wrongdoing.
Intelligence agencies have conducted secret operations.
None of this makes the Protocols genuine.
In fact, it makes careful investigation even more important.
Because if we want to uncover genuine wrongdoing, we need evidence.
Documents, records, financial trails, witness testimony, independent corroboration, verifiable connections, named individuals, specific actions...
And a willingness to abandon a theory when the evidence contradicts it.
Otherwise, we aren't investigating a conspiracy.
We are constructing one.
That is the most important lesson hidden inside the strange history of the Protocols.
The danger isn't simply believing one particular lie.
It is learning a method of thinking in which every piece of information is forced to support the conclusion we already reached.
Once that happens, reality no longer has the power to change our minds.
And when an old antisemitic myth is sitting there waiting to provide the ultimate villain, it can become very easy to mistake prejudice for discovery.
The Protocols of the Elders of Zion did not expose a secret Jewish plan for world domination.
They exposed something else entirely.
They exposed how easily a fabricated story can be turned into apparent evidence.
They showed how an invented enemy can be given a name, a document and a fictional history.
And they showed how a lie can survive long after the evidence has destroyed it.
More than a century after the Protocols were exposed as a forgery, the document still circulates.
That should tell us something.
Not about the secret power of Jews.
But about the extraordinary power of a compelling conspiracy story.
The world is complicated.
Power is real.
Corruption is real.
Secrets are real.
Conspiracies are real.
But none of that means that Jews are secretly responsible for what happens in the world.
And the history of the Protocols gives us one of the clearest warnings imaginable about what happens when we stop demanding evidence and start looking for a scapegoat.
The supposed secret meeting never happened.
The supposed Elders never existed.
The supposed plan was fabricated.
And the "proof" was itself a forgery.
That is not a conspiracy theory.
That is the historical record.
